The Impact of Rural Dentistry

Rural dentistry isn’t just a career move – it’s an opportunity to build deeper relationships, create healthier futures, and make an impact that goes far beyond the dental chair.

Imagine starting each day knowing your work directly transforms lives. In many rural communities, access to dental care is nearly nonexistent, leading to severe pain, untreated disease, and loss of confidence for countless patients. As a dentist, you have the power to change this reality. Rural dentistry isn’t just a career move; it’s an opportunity to build deeper relationships, create healthier futures, and make an impact that goes far beyond the dental chair.

Why Rural Communities Need Dentists Like You

Distance Barriers

Patients in rural areas often travel hours to reach the nearest dentist. Unlike urban communities with numerous options, rural families may skip preventive care entirely due to the lengthy travel distances involved.

Dentist Shortages

Some rural counties have fewer than 10 dentists per 100,000 people, and many have none. Access to specialists, such as oral surgeons and orthodontists, is even more limited, forcing patients to travel to distant cities.

Financial Barriers

Income disparities and low dental insurance coverage are common. Many patients rely on Medicaid, yet less than half of Texas dentists accept Medicaid. CDP works to fill this gap by selecting strategic practice locations and accepting Medicaid, ensuring that kids and adults receive the care they need.

Significant Dental Needs

Rural patients face:

  • Higher decay rates in children due to lack of fluoridated water.
  • Less dental education leads to poor home care habits.
  • Greater use of tobacco products and sugary beverages.
  • More manual labor jobs increase the risk of oral injuries.

Life-Changing Impact

Without accessible dental care, rural patients often wait until problems become emergencies, leading to extractions, pain, lost work hours, and reduced self-esteem. Pediatric dentistry is especially crucial for keeping kids healthy, in school, and thriving in the long term.
